Donald Trump, Jr. is an honorable man and the controversy over his conversation with a Kremlin-linked lawyer who promised compromising information on Hillary Clinton’s campaign during June 2016 is a witch-hunt, a top supporter of President Trump said Sunday evening.
Anthony Scaramucci, an informal adviser to the Trump White House and a member of the president’s transition team, said on Twitter there’s nothing to the scandal.
“@DonaldJTrumpJr is a virtuous and honorable man. Virtue means the courage to act with integrity. Don does that everyday. #stopwitchunt,” Scarmucci tweeted Sunday.
The president’s oldest son is on the hot seat after two New York Times reports in two days showed he took a meeting with a lawyer who had connections to the Russian government.
According to the report, which was confirmed by Trump, Jr., the president’s son was contacted by an acquaintance who he knew from the 2013 Miss Universe held in Moscow. The acquaintance said the attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya, had compromising information on Clinton and her campaign and wanted to meet.
Trump, Jr. said in a statement that he met with Veselnitskaya, who made some vague statements about Clinton and the Democratic National Committee working with the Russian government. He said he found the statements dubious at best and Veselnitskaya soon moved on to talking about the adoption of Russian children by Americans.
Trump, Jr., said he was frustrated at being misled and ended the meeting early.
Trump’s then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort and son-in-law, and now top White House adviser, Jared Kushner were in attendance at the meeting.
