Washington Wine Academy’s 1k Beer Walk in Crystal City, Saturday and Sunday Coming off the success of last year’s 1k Wine Walk, Washington Wine Academy president and founder Jim Barker had a bright idea.
How about a beer event as well?
Following last week’s second annual wine walk in Crystal City, the WWA presents a 1k Beer Walk this Saturday and Sunday.
In the covered Crystal City Shops area, beer stations will be set up throughout a 1k “course.” This isn’t really a race, but a fun way to get a good beer workout.
More than 30 beers will be poured from such brewers as Port City (Alexandria), Brooklyn, Flying Dog, Harpoon, Magic Hat and New Belgium.
Despite its vino-centric name and roots, Washington Wine Academy is looking to do more beer business, and has operated a beer school the last few years.
“This is my first real experience doing a dedicated large-scale beer event,” Barker said. He added that 2,200 people came out for this year’s wine walk, and he expects 1,500 to 1,600 people this weekend for the beer event.
There will even be a dozen wines offered for those non-beer drinkers who want to take a lap.
So far, Barker said he’s gotten a great response when people hear of his 1ks.
“A common response is ‘get out,’ ” he said.
