The super PAC aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., moved quickly on Tuesday to pounce on the Democrats after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., conceded she would seek roll back the GOP tax cuts if her party wins the House majority this fall.
Republicans view the position as a campaign issue that could help them protect the House majority amid severe midterm headwinds. Congressional Leadership Fund, the Ryan-affiliated super PAC, immediately cut an advertisement and ordered a six-figure national cable television buy highlighting Pelosi’s remarks during an interview with Politico.
“The second part there is accurate,” Pelosi said, when asked if existing Republican ads accusing her of wanting to raise taxes by rolling back tax cuts that were enacted in December were accurate. “I do think we should revisit the tax legislation in a way that we always have, in a bipartisan, transparent way that the result is unifying for the country.”
Pelosi, who would seek to be re-installed as speaker, has been critical of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the Republican tax reform law signed by President Trump. The bill, which cut taxes across the board, was opposed by Democrats on the grounds that the reductions were steered toward the wealthy. Here is the script of the CLF ad:
Voice Over: Last week, Nancy Pelosi vowed to be speaker again. This week, Pelosi promised to raise our taxes again.
Politico Interview: They have a new ad. It said that you would like to institute a single-payer health care program and roll back the tax cuts that they passed this year…
Pelosi: Well, the second part there is accurate.
(Laughter)
Voice Over: It’s not funny. If the Pelosi liberals win, you will pay higher taxes.
Pelosi: The second part there is accurate.
“Nancy Pelosi is the gift that keeps on giving,” CLF executive director Corry Bliss said.
