Too bad Wednesday’s thrashing of the New York Red Bulls doesn’t count in the MLS standings. Without that match, D.C. United is currently suffering through its longest winless streak of the season — four matches.
The Galaxy also advanced to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals on Wednesday, but the defending MLS Cup champions are having a much tougher time in league play. Los Angeles has won two of its last three matches — former United forward Santino Quaranta scored in each victory — but still resides in the Western Conference cellar.
In last year’s clash at RFK, Landon Donovan stole the show and the victory for the visitors with two second-half goals. D.C. has defeated Los Angeles just three times in the last 12 meetings, the most recent victory coming last year in Los Angeles. It was United’s firstin the series since 2003.
With no players missing due to suspension and attacking midfielder Christian Gomez (leg tendon strain) listed as probable, D.C. should be back to its full strength lineup.
