Army of Anyone has a few good men ? or musicians, that is.
The group consists of former Filter frontman Richard Patrick, Stone Temple Pilots? bassist Robert DeLeo and guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Ray Luzier.
The guys had crossed paths before while Stone Temple Pilots and Filter were on tour, but didn?t realize they were sitting on a supergroup until a collaboration in 2005.
Patrick asked the DeLeo brothers to co-write the song “A Better Place” for Filter?s upcoming fourth album. “It was very collective,” Dean DeLeo said. [Rich, Robert and I] put the song together and then decided that it should be more than just onesong, so we proceeded with it.”
Patrick and the DeLeo?s formed Army of Anyone shortly thereafter, adding Luzier, formerly with David Lee Roth?s band. Their self-titled debut album dropped in November 2006.
DeLeo says being in Army of Anyone now is a big change from his days as the guitarist in Stone Temple Pilots. “I had the luxury of being in a band, and it was fulfilling in some aspects, but very unfulfilling in others. I didn?t want to be away from my kid for seven weeks,” he said. “I wanted an awakening of my consciousness, of my being as a man, friend, dad, brother.”
The band has been making its way across the country on tour since November, hitting much smaller venues than they used to. “It?s much easier to play in front of huge crowds. [Playing small venues] forces us to be on our toes,” DeLeo said. “In that sort of intimate atmosphere, the room is much tighter and there?s not a lot of room for error. We dig that.”
“It?s been nice because it just feels like an extended family across the country,” he added. “We can hang out with everybody and just chat. We?re thrilled, it?s nice to be in a setting like that.”
“[Army of Anyone] is critically acclaimed for their debut album as well as their incredible live set, which features the best songs of Stone Temple Pilots and Filter,” said Mark Phillips, the band?s manager. “It’s amazing rock musicians making amazing rock.”
