Dinner gets political: Republicans prefer bacon, while liberals gravitate toward kale

Apparently, conservatives and liberals go together like bacon and kale.

After analyzing Twitter discussions, Bloomberg Businessweek discovered that individuals in liberal states tend to mention kale more, while those in conservative states focused on bacon. We’re guessing Ron Swanson would be pleased with — and not at all surprised by — these results.

In particular, 17 of the top 23 states talking more about kale voted for President Obama during the 2012 election, and 11 out of the 13 top bacon states voted for Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

Equally interesting is the fact that politically moderate states were also moderate in their opinions of the vegetable versus the meat, favoring neither one of the two foods.

The top bacon-centric states are Wyoming, Iowa, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Delaware, Texas, South Carolina and West Virginia, according to the analysis.

Contrarily, the top kale-speaking states are Vermont, Hawaii, New York, South Dakota, Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon, California, Montana and Rhode Island.

There is something positive to take out of this discovery, though. Recipes demonstrate that kale and bacon actually work quite well together, balancing one another with health and flavor, nutrients and deliciousness.
