According to NAACP President Emeritus Julian Bond, the Tea Party deserved to be targeted by the International Revenue Service because it’s the “Taliban wing of American politics.”
“I think it’s entirely legitimate to look at the Tea Party,” Bond said during an interview with MSNBC‘s Thomas Roberts on Tuesday. “Here are a group of people who are admittedly racist, who are overtly political, who’ve tried as best they can to harm President Obama in every way they can.”
While Bond was furious at the IRS when the agency targeted the NAACP back in 2004, he said he does not consider his comments a “double standard at all.”
“They are the Taliban wing of American politics,” he said of the Tea Party. “We all ought to be a little worried about them.”
When Roberts asked if it was “a little harsh” to compare the Tea Party to the Taliban, Bond still didn’t take back his controversial claims.
“The truth may hurt, but it’s the truth,” he responded.
Despite his heavy attack of the Tea Party, the former NAACP head did admit “it was wrong for the IRS to behave in this heavy handed manner.”
“They didn’t explain it well before or now what they’re doing and why they’re doing it,” he added.
