A New Jersey health system fired six supervisors who refused to get vaccinated for COVID-19.
RWJBarnabas Health announced that over 99% of its nearly 3,000 management staff have been vaccinated against COVID-19 but that six supervisors who were not “are no longer employees of RWJBH.”
“Thanks to the incredible commitment of our leaders, the vast majority of our management team has been vaccinated against COVID-19,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “As of July 14, 2,979 staff members, or 99.7 percent, who are at the supervisor level and above, have been fully vaccinated or received medical and religious exemptions or a deferral.”
“Regrettably, six staff at the supervisor level and above have not complied with the mandate and are no longer employees of RWJBH, per our policy,” the statement added.

RWJBarnabas established a vaccine mandate back in May for all staff supervisors and above, which it plans to extend to all staff and physicians, the spokesperson said.
“At RWJBarnabas Health we have an ethical and professional responsibility to protect our patients and ensure a safe, COVID-19 free environment,” the spokesperson said.
Similar requirements have been established by hospitals and other employers across the country, sparking lawsuits and employee separations.
More than 150 Houston Methodist Hospital employees either resigned or were fired in June after being suspended for not complying with the hospital system’s vaccine mandate.

The city of San Francisco announced in June that it would give its 35,000 employees until July 29 to be vaccinated and to provide proof through an online employee portal. Those who fail to comply could be terminated.
The percentage of U.S. adults who have received at least one coronavirus vaccine dose stood at 68.3% on Wednesday, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while 48.7% of the total population have been fully vaccinated.
