Mass grave of 900 Ukrainians found in Kyiv, Zelensky says

The remains of roughly 900 Ukrainian civilians were found in a mass gravesite in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The latest discovery is one of several mass graves that have been reportedly found in the country, making it impossible to know the true death toll, Zelensky said on Friday. Country officials will continue to investigate crimes committed by Russian troops and organize a census to get a clearer picture of how many Ukrainians are missing or have been killed, he said.

“Despite the fact that the Russians are covering their tracks, they found a grave of 900 people again,” Zelensky told reporters.

The recent discovery comes as the president seeks to deal with the mass deportation of thousands of Ukrainian citizens to Russia, where several have said they’ve endured mistreatment. Zelensky met with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier this week to discuss the deportations.

“We estimate that 500,000 people were deported from the region,” Zelensky said on Friday. “The Russians said they had accepted 1 million.”

Ukrainian officials have expressed concerns about mass graves being found throughout the country, including one in Mariupol that was detected by satellite imagery. That grave is one of the largest found so far, with officials estimating it’s 20 times larger than another site found in Bucha, according to the Mariupol City Council.

At least 2,800 Ukrainian civilians have been killed amid the Russian invasion that began two months ago, with another 3,180 injured, according to the United Nations Human Rights Watch.
