For once, it’s a good time to be a Washington sports fan. The Redskins just drafted a franchise quarterback. The Caps came up big in a Game 7 against the defending Stanley Cup champions. And the Nationals own the best record in the National League. So what team is creating the most buzz in the District? 3. Nationals » Washington has won the first six series of the season behind a starting pitching staff that had a scoreless innings streak end at 26 on Wednesday night. Entering Thursday night’s game, the Nationals’ starters were 8-2 with a 1.71 ERA, 103 strikeouts and just 22 walks. But there’s still more than 140 games left in the regular season to get excited about the Nationals.
2. Capitals » From underachieving to overachieving? After a disappointing regular season when the Capitals squeaked into the playoffs as the No. 7 seed, Washington is in the same position as last year — the Eastern Conference semifinals. The expectations may be lower than previous seasons, but the unpredictability of postseason hockey is always exciting. It’s more fun rooting for the underdog — which the Capitals will remain for the rest of the postseason.
1. Redskins » NFL is king everywhere, but especially in the District. It’s not uncommon for the Redskins to win the offseason. Big-name free agents have often found a home in Washington during Dan Snyder’s tenure as owner, but the Redskins have been searching for a long-term solution at quarterback since Joe Theismann stopped playing in 1985. Drafting Robert Griffin III seems almost too good to be true.
