This week’s Liberal Media Scream features Morning Joe Scarborough feeding off President Trump’s weekend tweets suggesting that four minority Democratic House women “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how …”
On Monday’s show on MSNBC, Scarborough repeatedly equated Trump with former KKK leader David Duke. After MoveOn’s Karine Jean-Pierre declared there’s no difference between “the Twitter feed of the President of the United States and a radical racist white supremacist,” Scarborough jumped in: “David Duke. Seriously, you could ask people, did David Duke say this or did Donald Trump say this?”
A few minutes later Scarborough broadened his attack: “This is about a political party now that has embraced the racial ideology of David Duke.” Wrapping up the three-hour program, Scarborough doubled down: “These are not the words of an American president we heard over the weekend. These are the words of David Duke, Klans members, and white nationalists, neo-Nazis.”
From the July 15 Morning Joe, starting at about 6:25 a.m. EDT:
Karine Jean-Pierre: “If you did a blind test on the Twitter feed, you could not tell the difference between the Twitter feed of the President of the United States and a radical racist white supremacist. You couldn’t tell the difference.”
Joe Scarborough: “David Duke. Seriously, you could ask people, did David Duke say this or did Donald Trump say this?”
Jean-Pierre: “Yes, that’s exactly right. Joe. And here’s the thing, this goes back to the point I was tying to make at the beginning here. Donald Trump is not testing his 2020 strategy. This is his 2020 strategy. It is racism. It is fear. It is bigotry.”
Mika Brzezinski: “It’s his last hope.”
Jean-Pierre: “Exactly. This is his last hope.”
….
Scarborough, at 6:32 a.m.: “This is about a political party now that has embraced the racial ideology of David Duke. Good luck with that in the years to come. Because you are going to be left on the dust bin of political history, Republicans.”
….
Scarborough, at 8:59 a.m.: “These are not the words of an American president we heard over the weekend. These are the words of David Duke, Klans members, and white nationalists, neo Nazis. They know it. They know it. They need to condemn it today.”
Media Research Center Vice President of Research Brent Baker explains our weekly pick: “Reasonable people can be uncomfortable with the tenor of Trump’s Sunday tweets suggesting four far-left congresswomen “go back” to their countries, but Scarborough, as he too often does, is so enraged that he goes beyond rational criticism and impugns the president and all Republicans as members of the Klan. Thus, he loses any credibility as a critic of Trump and Trump’s supporters.”
Rating: Four out of five screams.
