China warns against traveling to the US because of ‘frequent’ shootings

China issued a warning to its citizens who want to travel to the United States to be mindful of shootings when assessing the risk of travel.

China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued the warning, which will remain in effect until the end of the year, on Tuesday.

“Recently, shootings, robberies and thefts have occurred frequently in the United States. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism reminds Chinese tourists to fully assess the risk of travel to the United States, keep abreast of information on public security, laws and regulations, and improve their awareness of safety and security,” the ministry’s website states.

State-run media also warned Chinese citizens that “U.S. law enforcement agencies have on multiple occasions used methods such as entry and exit checks, and on-site interviews to harass Chinese citizens in the U.S.”

The message comes shortly after the mass shooting in Virginia Beach, Va., where 12 people were killed. More than a dozen people were also injured in the attack.

The FBI has reported an overall 4.3% decrease in the number of violent crimes in the first six months of 2018 when compared with the same time in 2017.
