WATCH: DeSantis welcomes ‘support from African Americans’ like Elon Musk

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis welcomed the endorsement of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday.

DeSantis was unveiling the Florida State Guard during a press conference when a reporter asked him about Musk’s endorsement.

“I’m focused on 2022, but with Elon Musk, what I would say is I welcome support from African Americans. What can I say?” DeSantis said to a laughing crowd.

MUSK IS LEANING TOWARD VOTING FOR DESANTIS IN THE 2024 ELECTION

DeSantis is facing one Republican competitor, John Joseph Mercadante, in Florida’s August primary. There are currently five Democratic candidates vying to be the Democratic nominee.

Arizona Republican senatorial candidate Blake Masters faced backlash when he referred to Musk as “our country’s richest African American entrepreneur” during a television segment last year.

Musk’s father is South African. He was born in Pretoria and briefly attended Pretoria University before transferring to Queen’s University in Ontario, where his maternal grandparents and mother are from. Musk ultimately received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He has since become a naturalized citizen.

Musk tweeted early Wednesday in response to a Twitter user asking him if he would vote for a Republican presidential candidate in 2024. While Musk’s first response was “to be determined,” when pushed on who he was leaning toward, Musk simply responded, “DeSantis.”

Leading up to the 2020 election, Musk endorsed Democratic candidate Andrew Yang of New York. Musk now believes “DeSantis has a better chance of winning” than Yang, according to a tweet.
