Democrat says extramarital affair should disqualify Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom from the governor’s mansion

The Democrat running against Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom for California governor said Thursday that Newsom’s past extramarital affair should disqualify him from the race.

“If he was in the legislature right now, he’d be called out, and like what we’ve seen, being forced out,” Amanda Renteria told the Sacramento Bee. “We’ve got to be sending the message that the more power you have, the more responsibility you have to protect others.”

Newsom had an affair with a city hall aide, Roby Rippey Gibney, while he was mayor of San Francisco more than 10 years ago. The aide was married to his campaign manager.

Newsom has apologized for the affair on multiple occasions and in a recent Facebook post, Gibney said that while she supports the #MeToo movement, she is “doubtful it applies” to her case involving Newsom.

Despite Gibney’s comments, Renteria told the Bee that “a boss having sex with him employees is an unacceptable situation.”

“No one should be beyond that accountability,” she added.

Renteria is a former Hillary Clinton campaign official and announced she was entering the gubernatorial race last month against four Democratic candidates.

When contacted, Newsom’s office directed the Washington Examiner to a campaign contact, which did not respond to a request for comment.
