White House: Biden’s ‘No. 1 focus’ is lowering prices before inflation report

President Joe Biden is committed to decreasing consumer prices before the release of September’s inflation numbers, according to the White House.

The “No. 1 focus” of Biden’s economic plan is “lowering costs for the American people, making sure that we are tackling inflation,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Wednesday.

“We understand we have more work to do,” she said aboard Air Force One. “We get that the American people are feeling that pinch.”

At the same time, Jean-Pierre reminded the traveling press corps, “We’ve also seen some progress, including regarding employment and gas prices, at least last summer.” The nationwide average cost per gallon has increased in recent weeks.

“We’re giving families a little bit more breathing room,” she said. “The Inflation Reduction Act is going to bring down everyday costs … And it’s really a stark difference from what you’re seeing from Republicans, from MAGA Republicans, congressional Republicans in particular.”

Jean-Pierre contended that Biden’s comments concerning the possibility of a “slight” recession during an interview this week with CNN are consistent because he still downplayed the likelihood of a downturn.

“We take this unique, global economic moment very seriously,” she said. “The president wants the American people to know that because of America’s resilience and because of the president’s economic plan that we have seen throughout the 20 months, we are in a stronger position than any other country to navigate these global challenges that we’re seeing in front of us.”
