Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., made an appeal to President Trump to reconsider his endorsement of Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., in the special election in Alabama.
Brooks’ overture came after the president chided Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., for comments made about him earlier this week.
“I completely agree, Mr. President. McConnell & Strange don’t support your agenda. I do. Reconsider endorsement @realDonaldTrump? #DitchMitch,” Brooks tweeted in response to Trump.
Brooks’ call to Trump came after the president endorsed Strange in the special election Tuesday night.
Brooks is running against Strange, who took the seat vacated by Jeff Sessions when he became attorney general earlier this year.
Strange is backed by McConnell and the majority leader’s super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund.
The president went head-to-head with McConnell on Wednesday after the Senate majority leader blamed Trump for setting unrealistic expectations, which have contributed to the narrative that Congress hasn’t accomplished anything in 2017.
“Part of the reason I think that the storyline is that we haven’t done much is because, in part, the president and others have set these early timelines about things need to be done by a certain point,” McConnell said Monday at a Rotary Club meeting in Kentucky.
Trump hit back at McConnell on his Twitter account Wednesday.
“Senator Mitch McConnell said I had ‘excessive expectations,’ but I don’t think so. After 7 years of hearing Repeal & Replace, why not done?” Trump tweeted.
