Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged girlfriend of sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein, was hiding out at 156-acre property in Bedford, New Hampshire, federal prosecutors say.
Maxwell purchased the $1.07 million with cash in December 2019 through a “carefully anonymized LLC,” according to a report by the Daily Caller. The FBI arrested Maxwell on Thursday on charges related to sex abuse conspiracy and perjury.
A memorandum by prosecutors said the purchase was her most recent activity in a yearlong effort to remain incognito following Epstein’s arrest in the summer of 2019. During the time of her real estate acquisition, she started using a different name and changed her phone number and email address.
The address of the property Maxwell bought was not identified, but records showed there is only one property in the town that matches the cost of what Maxwell paid.
Federal prosecutors also wrote in the memo that Maxwell should not be granted bail because of her possible motive to flee.
“The defendant is an extreme risk of flight,” the memo said. “The Government respectfully submits that the defendant cannot meet her burden of overcoming the statutory presumption in favor of detention. There are no conditions of bail that would assure the defendant’s presence in court proceedings in this case. Accordingly, any application for bail should be denied.”
Epstein was found dead in his jail cell a few months after his initial arrest.
