Hillary Clinton criticizes Kari Lake over apparent joke made about attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband

Hillary Clinton heavily criticized Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake for seeming to make light of the recent attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, asking “what kind of person is that?”

The former presidential candidate had been discussing the Republican party’s focus on crime in the 2022 midterm elections and the recent attack on Paul Pelosi, arguing that the party’s focus on crime was to drum up fear among voters. Clinton described the attack on Pelosi as “a real indicator of where we are in our country right now” and accused Lake, whom she called “the woman running in Arizona,” of laughing about the attack, according to CNN.

“You know, I am rarely shocked anymore, but the reaction that I’ve seen from a number of Republicans, both in person and online, making fun of that attack, somehow trying to turn it into a joke, the same party that wants us to be worried about crime?” Clinton said. “You know, the hypocrisy is incredibly obvious and I want voters to think hard about why would you give authority to people who laugh at what happened to Paul Pelosi. We can have our differences over all kinds of policies, but when you really get to the human level, my goodness, what kind of person is that, and why would we entrust any power to such a person?”

Lake had made her comment on Paul Pelosi during a rally on Monday when she noted that Nancy Pelosi had protection in Washington, D.C., but not at her own home, where Pelosi’s husband was located during the attack. Lake is now arguing that she “never made light of the attack” and that her comments were taken out of context with “creative editing.” There is no evidence that Lake’s comments from the rally on Monday were edited.

“I was talking about our children and why they don’t have better security. And I said that our politicians have security and that our athletes have security, and we need to have security,” Lake said“Go back and look at the tape and don’t do any creative editing, like the fake media tends to do, and you’ll see what I was saying.”

Paul Pelosi was attacked in his San Francisco home on Friday, after a man, identified as David DePape, 42, allegedly broke in to look for Nancy Pelosi, according to a federal criminal complaint. During the incident, DePape struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer, causing a skull fracture and serious injuries to his arm and hands, according to a spokesperson for the speaker.

Some Republicans, such as Donald Trump Jr., have joked about the attack, while other top leaders in the party, including former President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) condemned the attack. In an interview on Sunday, Trump called the attack a “terrible thing.”

DePape faces multiple criminal charges for the attack, including attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder, and threats to a public official. If convicted, he could face a sentence ranging from 13 years to life in prison.
