Micron pledges $100B to build New York semiconductor factory following CHIPS Act

One of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers announced that it intends to invest more than $100 billion into the construction of a new factory in New York amid efforts by the White House and Congress to encourage semiconductor manufacturing within the United States.

Micron announced on Tuesday that it was building a new factory in Clay, New York, with the intent to invest and expand the factory over the next 20 years. The factory will be the “largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the United States,” according to Micron. The company pledged to create more than 50,000 jobs in New York, including 9,000 factory jobs. The plant is expected to include 2.4 million square feet, or 40 football fields’ worth, of cleanroom space for manufacturing purposes.

“This historic leading-edge memory mega fab in Central New York will deliver benefits beyond the semiconductor industry by strengthening U.S. technology leadership as well as economic and national security, driving American innovation and competitiveness for decades to come,” said Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra in a press statement.

Mehrotra thanked President Joe Biden for the necessary assistance to begin this project through the CHIPS Act, which Biden signed into law in August and provides $280 billion in funding for science and technology efforts. Intel has also announced plans for a major investment in domestic semiconductor manufacturing following the enactment of the legislation.

Micron also broke ground less than a month ago on a new semiconductor factory in Idaho, in which the company intends to invest $15 billion.

Biden expressed excitement about the factory. “To those who doubted that America could dominate the industries of the future, I say this — you should never bet against the American people. Today is another win for America, and another massive new investment in America spurred by my economic plan,” Biden said in a press statement.

The factory will begin site preparation in 2023, and construction will start in 2024. Micron said it hopes to ramp up production over the next decade.
