What Clark Said

On CNN yesterday, Wesley Clark tried to walk back his scandalous statement, saying: “What I said is I honor his service. He’s one of my heroes. But having served as a fighter pilot, however great it is to show your character and courage, does not necessarily mean that you’re the best qualified person in the race to be the president.” But Clark didn’t say that. He said on Fact the Nation that McCain’s military experience was not “a qualification to be president.” As Victor Davis Hanson points out: “note the indefinite article “a” that Clark employed, as in one of many that might make a successful President.” “The idea Clark was trying to communicate is that John McCain’s honorable military service should be divorced and analyzed separately from his foreign policy record.”
