Baltimore man again sentenced to life for murder

A Baltimore man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday after he was convicted a second time for the same murder.

Circuit Judge Albert Matricciani Jr. sentenced Tony Williams, 39, of Baltimore, to life in prison plus five years.

On Feb. 21, 1998, at 4:30 a.m., Williams went to the apartment of Dana Drake at 800 Dartmouth Road and shot her once in the back of the head with a .22-caliber handgun, according to the Baltimore City State?s Attorney?s Office.

Prosecutors said Williams stood to receive $100,000 from Drake?s life insurance policy.

A jury initially convicted Williams in 1999 of first-degree murder, and he began serving a prison term of life plus 20 years. But on April 14, 2006, Maryland?s highest court, the Court of Appeals, vacated Williams? conviction, citing a discovery violation by the prosecution.

Prosecutors proceeded with a new trial this year and won a conviction for a second time.
