Glen Burnie community to bid farewell to old Marley Middle School

Teachers and staff members at Marley Middle School in Glen Burnie have spent much of the past week moving furniture and supplies into their new school building next door.

On Monday, a special farewell celebration will give former and current teachers, staff and students the chance to say goodbye to the old building before it is demolished this summer.

“Dr. [Susan] Cassidy [the principal] thought it was important for those who had a role in building up the school to have a chance to say goodbye,” said Cordell Hunter, assistant principal.

Alex Szachnowicz, acting director of facilities for Anne Arundel County Schools, said the new Marley Middle School is about 90 percent complete.

Teachers will finish moving into their new classrooms once school ends next week.

The $32.9 million building represents a significant upgrade in technological capacity and instructional space from the original building, which dates to the early 1950s. The new building will accommodate up to 1,104 students, compared with a state capacity rating of 952 students in the old building.

Because the new building was constructed atop much of the school?s existing sports fields, new fields will be created on the site of the old building. Szachnowicz said those areas won?t be ready for the start of the school year because grass won?t be planted until later this year.

Construction will continue this summer at Harman Elementary School at Meade Heights, with students expected to move in over spring break in 2007. Work will also continue on the new Ferndale Early Childhood Center and the new gymnasium at North County High School.
