President Trump “does not want to go further” with a government spending bill that does not include money for his wall or steel slats, the White House said Thursday.
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump is planning to meet with Republican members of the House at noon as they debate a stopgap spending measure passed by the Senate late Wednesday.
The measure funds several government agencies at their current levels until Feb. 8, but it does not include Trump’s request for $5 billion for his wall across the U.S.-Mexico border.
“At this moment, the president does not want to go further without border security, which includes steel slats or a wall,” Sanders said in her statement. “The president is continuing to weigh his options.”
Trump has spent the morning airing his frustrations about the lack of money for his border wall on Twitter. In his most recent tweet, the president lamented that congressional leaders had promised to fund the wall after he signed a $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill in March, but “it didn’t happen.”
Though the Senate passed the short-term continuing resolution, conservatives in the House are urging GOP leaders to include the $5 billion in the measure.
Trump told Democratic leaders in the Oval Office last week he would be “proud” to shut down the government over funding for his border wall.
