The New York Ave-Florida Ave-Gallaudet U station is no more — now it’s NoMa.
Metro christened the Red Line station NoMa-Gallaudet U on Wednesday morning, part of its effort to shorten station names.
Signs at the station and around the system have already been changed to show the new name.
But the old “New York Ave” name isn’t entirely going away. It will be shown as a secondary name in smaller type for the next year to assist riders.
The agency was changing the maps for the launch of Rush Plus next week anyway, so it decided to look at station names. NoMa is the biggest change to occur after hours of discussion among board members and lobbying from local interest groups. King Street is becoming King St-Old Town and Waterfront will lose the SEU on its name, too.
So what is NoMa? It’s the newly branded name for the area north of Union Station until about Rhode Island Avenue where lots of new development is occurring. The Metro station there opened in November 2004 and serves more than 7,400 riders each weekday.
