US soldier killed in Afghanistan while fighting ISIS affiliate

A U.S. soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday, according to a military spokesman.

The soldier was killed during operations against the Islamic State-Khorasan group in Nangarhar province, according to Navy Capt. Bill Salvin, spokesman for U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.

“The soldier was mortally wounded late Saturday,” Salvin said in a message posted on the official Twitter account of Operation Resolute Support. “More information will be released as appropriate.”

ISIS-Khorasan is an ISIS affiliate that operates in Afghanistan. Nangarhar province, on the eastern border near Pakistan, has been been a base of operations for ISIS since 2015, the military said.

“Daesh [ISIS] seek to use the area to train, equip, disseminate propaganda, and expand their control over innocent Afghans,” U.S. Forces-Afghanistan said in September.
