EPA awards grant to clean up Chester site

CHESTER, W.Va. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $200,000 grant to clean up the site of a former pottery plant in Chester.

The EPA says ceramic items were manufactured at the former Taylor, Smith and Taylor Pottery site from 1900 until 1982. The facility is being demolished and the property developed for other business purposes, but it’s polluted with metals and other contaminants.

The brownfields cleanup grant was awarded to the Business Development Corporation of the Northern Panhandle. Along with cleaning up the property, the money will be used for reuse planning and community outreach.
