Mizzou students react to president’s resignation on Yik Yak

Not all Mizzou students support the resignation of university president Tom Wolfe as evidenced by their reaction on the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak. But the most pressing comment posted so far was a threat made by a non-student.

USA Today reported that early Wednesday morning police had taken Hunter Park, 19, of St. Louis, Mo., into custody. He is being held on a $4,500 bond. Park was located 94 miles south of Columbia, where the university is located.

Tweets sent from Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin and the university’s emergency information center told students the suspect had been apprehended and to “please do not spread rumors.”

Some students were not happy their president was forced out, and took to Yik Yak to share their views about the situation.

MSNBC put together a compilation of these posts. Many of them said Wolfe’s resignation won’t actually solve the issue of racism on campus. Others pointed out that the protesters don’t speak for all students, and that all of this negative attention will hurt the university.

Yik Yak released “A Message To Our Community” about the events taking place at the University of Missouri, which included the threat. They also wrote that “ultimately, we’ve been impressed by the strength of the student body during an extremely tough time.”
