Online retailer Shopify removes Trump campaign goods from site

E-commerce site Shopify removed all stores affiliated with President Trump in the wake of chaotic, violent riots on Capitol Hill.

The online retailer, which hosted Trump’s personal brand store TrumpStore, as well as shops related to the Trump campaign, announced it would remove the stores, accusing Trump of violating its company rules.

“Shopify does not tolerate actions that incite violence,” a company spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Based on recent events, we have determined that the actions by President Donald J. Trump violate our Acceptable Use Policy, which prohibits promotion or support of organizations, platforms or people that threaten or condone violence to further a cause. As a result, we have terminated stores affiliated with President Trump.”

Trump has been hit by several Big Tech companies following a night of violent unrest, which left four people dead.

Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram have locked the president out of his accounts, citing more potential incitement of violence in the days ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

On Thursday, Facebook announced Trump will be banned from the social media platform “indefinitely,” and for at least the two weeks before Jan. 20.
