President Trump said it “certainly looks like” Russia was behind the nerve agent attack on a former Russian double agent in England.
“It certainly looks like the Russians were behind it, something that should never, ever happen, and we’re taking it very seriously, as I think are many others,” Trump told reporters Thursday.
Trump, along with British Prime Minister Theresa May, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel issued a joint statement Thursday morning condemning the attack and blaming Russia for it.
The four leaders said they “abhor the attack” and said they “share the UK assessment that there is no plausible alternative explanation.”
Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were found unconscious on a park bench in Salisbury, England, this month and remain hospitalized. It was determined they were attacked with a military-grade nerve agent developed by for the former Soviet Union during the Cold War.
Trump said it is a “very sad situation.”
May announced Wednesday the British government will be expelling 23 Russian diplomats in response to the nerve agent attack.
Russia, though, has denied any involvement and said the British government’s action have led to a new low in relations between the United Kingdom and Russia.
