NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities arrested two correction officers and about 20 inmates following a search of a New York City jail for drugs, contraband and weapons.
There arrests were part of a larger probe into violence and other criminality on Rikers Island.
The city departments of Correction and Investigation said the arrests stemming from Monday’s search are aimed at quelling rising levels of violence.
Authorities had previously said 12 correction officers and their superiors had been referred to prosecutors as part of a months-long investigation into smuggling and other alleged crimes.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press investigators searched inmate cells, common areas and locker rooms. The official said investigators also searched about 100 correction officers Monday.
The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
