Top Five: Questions for Terps

With the Maryland football team opening the preseason Monday, what are the primary questions as the Terrapins enter camp?

5. Backup QB »

Beyond C.J. Brown, none of the quarterbacks has taken a college snap. The Terps don’t have the luxury of redshirting freshmen Perry Hills or Caleb Rowe. At least one will have to be ready at a moment’s notice.

4. Tackles » When starters transfer out, it’s never a good sign. When two are your bookend offensive tackles, it’s disastrous. The top potential replacement is Justin Gilbert, who has plenty of experience on the field and under the knife (two ACL surgeries). Is true freshman Mike Madaras (Good Counsel) ready? He might have to be.

3. New systems » Maryland entered 2011 running a spread with a pro-style quarterback and now enters 2012 running a pro-style offense with a spread quarterback? Go figure. On defense, the switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 will be aided by 17 players back with starting experience.

2. Playmakers » Coach Randy Edsall’s top two weapons might be freshmen. Running back Wes Brown has rare size (6-foot-1, 220 pounds) and speed. Explosive wide receiver Stefon Diggs is one of the Terps’ most prized recruits in years. How much will Edsall be willing to use them?

1. Randy Edsall » Can he survive another 2-10 season? Even with a deal running through 2016, probably not. Edsall’s future could depend on whether he continues to recruit well and the young Terps show potential for improvement.
