Spotify shuts down Russian office ‘indefinitely’

Spotify announced Wednesday the closing of its Russian office, citing the ongoing “unprovoked attack on Ukraine.”

The music streaming platform said it will still allow Russian access to its services, however.

“We think it’s critically important to try to keep our service operational in Russia to allow for the global flow of information,” the platform told Variety.

Recently, the platform removed Kremlin-backed content in some locations, following the lead of several other companies, including YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter.

A Spotify representative said the company is “shocked and saddened” by the events in Ukraine, adding, “Our first priority over the past week has been the safety of our employees and to ensure that Spotify continues to serve as an important source of global and regional news at a time when access to information is more important than ever.”
