Senator Bernard Sanders (“Bernie” to his friends) describes his party status as “independent.” He caucuses with the Democrats and is reliably to the left on any matter of importance. As, for instance, immigration. So he is a “yes” on the great big bill that will fix everything and that nobody has time to read. This, though as Alexander Bolton of The Hill reports, Sanders has:
… spoken out against what he has called a “massive increase in temporary guest worker programs” at a time of high unemployment.
But Sanders was mollified
… after negotiators agreed to provide $1.5 billion over two years for a youth jobs program.
But of course. A program. Administered from Washington. Why didn’t anyone think of this before?
That’s the kind of payoff that comes from political independence.
