Gov. Andrew Cuomo: New York is ‘finally ahead of this virus’

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said New York is “finally getting ahead” of the coronavirus pandemic that has killed thousands of people in his state.

“The good news, on the overall, is we’re finally ahead of this virus. For so long, we were playing catch-up,” the Democratic governor said during a Friday afternoon news conference. “We were playing catch-up. We were behind it.”

“Now, I feel for the first time, we’re actually ahead of it. We have showed that we can control the beast,” he continued. “Remember, our numbers are coming down in New York. Most states in this country, you still see the numbers going up … We have it on the decline, so we have the beast on the run.”

The governor said that despite the good news, those in New York must still continue to follow the state’s social distancing guidelines to remain ahead of the pandemic.

“We haven’t killed the beast, but we’re ahead of it,” Cuomo added.

New York has been the hardest-hit state in the country with the most infections and deaths. Since the coronavirus pandemic began, there has been more than 330,000 cases in New York and more than 26,200 deaths.
