Banks remains hospitalized

Redskins kick returner/receiver Brandon Banks remains hospitalized after having a tube inserted into his chest, suggesting his stab wound was worse than initially believed.

Banks’ agent, James Gould, said Tuesday night he had the tube inserted in part as a precautionary measure to make sure he didn’t suffer a collapsed lung. When the tube is removed, Banks would be released. Gould initially believed Banks would be released by Tuesday but now says it could be within 24-48 hours.

Gould said Banks had received X-rays since the tube was inserted and he termed them “good.”

Banks was stabbed in the upper left abdomen outside a Northwest D.C. nightclub after an altercation in which he reportedly was helping his friend, Christopher Nixon. Gould disputed reports that Banks somehow might have instigated the fight. The police report suggests Gould’s version is accurate.

According to the report, Nixon and Jason Dacosta Shorter “engaged in a verbal altercation” before it turned physical. After Shorter argued with Nixon and Banks, the report said he “pulled a knife from his pocket, opened it and armed himself by holding the knife behind his back.”

One of the nightclub’s bouncers then stepped between the three, trying to break it up. But, the report — based in part on surveillance videos — said, Shorter  initially attacked Nixon with the knife. That’s when Nixon and Banks became engaged in a “physical altercation [with Shorter].” And Shorter then “repeatedly stabbed” Nixon and Banks.
