As the Bahamas grapples with chaos and destruction wrought by Hurricane Dorian, NBA superstar Michael Jordan has pledged to help.
Jordan, 56, said he would be donating $1 million to various nonprofit groups in order to help the island nation as it deals with what will likely be a long and costly recovery effort. Jordan’s manager, Estee Portnoy, tweeted out a statement from Jordan Tuesday.
“I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own property and visit frequently,” the six-time NBA champion said. “As the recovery and relief efforts continue, I will be tracking the situation closely and working to identify non-profit agencies where the funds will have the most impact.
“The Bahamian people are strong and resilient and I hope that my donation will be of help as they work to recover from this catastrophic storm,” he added.

There are at least 50 confirmed deaths so far in the Bahamas, which the hurricane lashed with blistering 185 mph winds at landfall. Rescue teams are still struggling to reach people stranded in their homes and deal with those who are still missing from the historically powerful storm.
