12th Navy midshipman expelled over ‘spice’ use

Another midshipman has been expelled from the U.S. Naval Academy for using or possessing synthetic marijuana, the academy said Thursday.

An academy spokeswoman said a female sophomore was expelled March 28. A total of 12 midshipmen have been expelled from the Annapolis school for “spice,” a type of synthetic marijuana, in an ongoing probe. The Defense Department and the Navy have banned the substance.

In all of the cases, other midshipmen alerted officials to the spice use, the Naval Academy said in a statement.

“Our standards are clear – spice has no place at USNA or in the naval service,” Vice Adm. Michael H. Miller, the academy’s superintendent, said in the statement. He said the investigation continues into allegations of illicit spice use at the school.
