The Federal Transit Administration has proposed putting $35 million in a transit spending plan sent to Congress this week to add 52 rail cars to the Metrorail Blue Line.
The cars are part of a project to allow the Blue Line to extend its service in Prince George’s County.
On Tuesday, the FTA announced the inclusion of the cars in a list of projects it has already agreed to fund. The Bush administration has recommended spending $1.9 million for fiscal 2008 as part of its New Starts program.
The Blue Line runs from southern Fairfax County toPrince George’s County and was extended about three miles into Maryland in late 2004. The $465 million extension runs from Addison Road station to Largo Town Center station in what the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority touts as the first segment of the Metrorail in Prince George’s County to extend beyond the Capital Beltway. The extension was jointly funded by Maryland and the federal government.
