A Colorado woman died while on a boating trip in Grand Canyon National Park on Thursday, according to park officials.
Mary Kelley, 68, was unresponsive when members of her group pulled her from the Colorado River’s Hance Rapid and began CPR, the National Park Service reported Friday. Park officials were alerted to the situation and flew a helicopter to the area to help, but the park service said all resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the park service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. The medical examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine Kelley’s cause of death, which will take one or two weeks to complete, the park told the Washington Examiner.
Hance Rapid is “a highly technical and powerful whitewater rapid” situated where Red Canyon intersects with the Colorado River and was formed by debris from flash floods that tore through Red Canyon, according to the park service.
