President Trump declared disasters Sunday in Alabama and Florida in response to the impact of Hurricane Nate.
The action allows the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate all disaster relief efforts.
“This action will help alleviate the hardship and suffering that the emergency may inflict on the local population, and provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures,” the president said in a statement.
The declaration will allow FEMA to moblize the resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency, including direct federal assistance.
The hurricane made landfall in Biloxi, Miss., in the early morning hours Sunday, and was downgraded to a tropical depression by the National Hurricane Center later in the day.
It has nevertheless left about 56,000 people in Mobile, Ala., without power.
