Officer Brian Hurtt said becoming a policeman was just something he had wanted to do since he was quite a young man. After graduating from Howard County Maryland’s Citizens’ Police Academy in 2004, Hurtt joined the Gaithersburg Police Department and has happily served Howard for four years. Though he looks forward to any future assignments, Hurtt said he thoroughly enjoys patrol and interacting with people.

Why did you choose the Gaithersburg Police Department?

There was a current opening in the department and my wife is originally from the area. I interviewed and sent in my resume. I made it through the process, and it has been a great fit.

Tell me about the call you received last Friday.

There was a dispatch for a missing 74-year-old woman who has a history of going missing in the past. My corporal and another shift partner responded to the address and began getting pictures and talking with the family. I got an idea for where she may have gone and went ahead on foot with a flashlight.

Where did you find her?

There’s a creek that runs into a wooded area by the Pepco power plant behind her home. When I was flashing my light into the power lines, I heard a faint “hello.” I followed it and found her sitting on the bank of the creek, soaking wet. She said she had fallen in and couldn’t get up. I think it was a combination of being cold and other undiagnosed problems. I put my coat around her and helped her to a flatter spot where it would be easy for medics to assist her.

What did the family say?

A lot of “thank you’s” and “God bless you’s.”

What’s the best part of your job?

When things turn out this way. When you can see a positive outcome and know you made a difference.
