More than three dozen organizations have agreed to participate in the 2017 inaugural parade celebrating the swearing in of President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
Trump transition officials released a list of 40 participants, including several veterans groups, first responders and marching bands who are expected to take part in the parade down Pennsylvania Avenue on Jan. 20.
Participants include the Cleveland Police Mounted Unit, Boy Scouts of America, Wounder Warriors group and Talladega College Band, among others. Each branch of the U.S. military will also be represented in the parade, per tradition.
Some who agreed to march in the parade honoring Trump drew immediately backlash on Twitter Friday. Students at New York’s Marist College, whose marching band plans to perform in the parade, accused their university of sending a message “to the public that no liberal arts college should be giving.”
“How do I go about transferring schools?” one student tweeted.
But Sara Armstrong, chief executive of this year’s Presidential Inauguration Committee, lauded the groups for honoring their country by marching in the inaugural parade.
“People from every corner of the country have expressed great interest in President-elect Trump’s inauguration and look forward to continuing a salute to our republic that spans more than two centuries,” she said in a statement.
The announcement came one day after iconic feminist leader Gloria Steinem said she agreed to serve as an honorary co-chair of the “Women’s March on Washington,” an event that is expected to draw nearly 200,000 Trump critics to the National Mall the day after the president-elect’s inauguration.
