2020 Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren has the best plans for the black community, according to a prominent African American magazine.
The Root, an online magazine that analyzes politics and news from the perspective of minorities, ranked the Democratic presidential candidates based specifically on their plans to help black voters and placed Warren at the top of the list. Author Michael Harriot said the Massachusetts senator’s stances on criminal justice, reparations, and education make her the best choice.
“Elizabeth Warren’s ‘black agenda’ is the blackest of them all. Unfortunately, she also seems to be invisible to everyone except Mike Bloomberg. But that’s only because she keeps punching him in the face during the debates. Then again, we’ve only counted the white votes,” he wrote.
The magazine, however, disregarded Warren’s history of claiming minority status, in which she has pointed to her “high cheekbones” as evidence of Native American heritage.
“Warren is the only candidate whose history isn’t marred by a problematic racial past,” Harriot said. “That whole Native American blunder might be irrelevant to most black people because we all have a cousin whose ‘good hair’ comes from her ‘Indian roots.’”
Former Vice President Joe Biden was granted second place as his policy platform for black Americans was deemed “progressive but not groundbreaking.”
“He wants to fix the inequalities through conventional means and left-center legislation. However, if enacted, they would make a significant impact,” the article noted.
Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who recently discussed racism with the author of the magazine’s piece, came in third for his “Douglass Plan for Black America.” Though the Root considered his plan thorough and academic, Harriot accused him of pandering.
“But, this is the part where we subtract points for appropriating the names of Frederick Douglass and Madame C.J. Walker for his political purposes,” he said. “That’s the worst kind of pandering. It actually turns some black voters off.”
Billionaire Tom Steyer, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar follow in the rankings. However, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, the only minority candidate remaining in the Democratic primary, came in last.
“Like her polling numbers, Tulsi Gabbard’s black agenda is nonexistent,” the piece read.
