D.C. population grows for first time since 1950

The District of Columbia’s population reached 601,723 in 2010, the first increase in the 10-year Census since 1950, according to U.S. Census figures released Tuesday morning.

D.C.’s population climbed 5 percent in 2010 from 572,059 in 2000.

Virginia and Maryland also saw population growth. Virginia’s population topped 8 million people, up 13 percent from 2000, while Maryland’s population grew 9 pecent to 5.77 million. Maryland remained one of the five most dense states.

Nationwide, the population climbed to 308.7 million, with the lowest growth since the Great Depression.
