Christie and Rubio supporters take off the gloves

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie responded to new attack ads from a super PAC supporting Marco Rubio’s presidential bid that seek to dismantle his early momentum in New Hampshire.

Conservative Solutions PAC, a super PAC supporting Rubio’s candidacy, released two new ads poised to air in the Granite State that slam the New Jersey governor. One ad argues that the New Jersey governor is Obama’s “favorite,” while the other closes with the message, “Chris Christie: High taxes, weak economy, scandals. Not what we need in the White House.”

“Chris Christie could well be President Obama’s favorite Republican governor,” a narrator says in one ad. “Why? Christie’s record. He instituted an Internet sales tax. He supported Common Core and liberal energy policies. Incredibly, Christie even backed Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion.”

The ad closes with a statement: “Chris Christie: One high-tax, Common Core, liberal energy-loving, Obamacare Medicaid-expanding president is enough.” The ads were first reported by National Review.

Christie will respond to the attack ads in an interview set to air with Bloomberg, according to his campaign.

“Well, I guess, I just wonder what happened to the Marco who so indignantly looked at Jeb Bush and said, ‘I guess someone must have convinced you that going negative against me helps you,'” Christie said in response to the ads. “I guess that same person now must have convinced Marco that going negative against Chris Christie is what he needs to do. Fact is, listen, I stand by my record as governor of New Jersey — it’s a good one. We just had the greatest private sector job growth year New Jersey has had in 15 years.

We have nearly cut unemployment in half and, let me just finish this, I think this is really important that, you know, if Sen. Rubio would just show up for work every once in awhile, he’s only got one job. He’s got to cast votes in the United States Senate. If he thinks that’s a worthless job, which he has basically said before, he should resign it; if he doesn’t, then he should show up and go and vote. I work every day for the people of New Jersey as governor, happy to have this conversation with Sen. Rubio anytime.”

Christie ranks third in the Washington Examiner‘s newest GOP presidential power rankings. Rubio ranks fourth.
