Citizens United President David Bossie called out the GOP establishment for hiding behind conservatives and using “our movement to get elected and then feign shock when conservatives call them out for bad policy” in 2012.
While Bossie acknowledged that the conservative movement was strong, he admonished those within the party, like former presidential candidates Mitt Romney and John McCain, whom he believes have divided the party and selling out on its principles.
“Those in the establishment that claim that they know how to win are simply living a lie,” he said. “Just look at the past two presidential campaigns. How did that work out for the establishment?”
According to Bossie, the only time when Republicans were successful in a recent election was 2010, when the conservative wing of the party was mobilized with the Tea Party movement.
Bossie also blamed Obama’s victory in November on George W. Bush and his former chief-of-staff Karl Rove. He argued that Bush and Rove were the architects behind the policy disasters that inevitably led to Bush’s low approval ratings.
“Those low approval ratings hurt the Republican and conservative brands and brought us President Barack Obama and Obamacare,” he commented.
He also called out Rove for his super PACs American Crossroads and the Conservative Victory Project, noting the irony of Rove using the word “conservative” in the title of his newest super PAC. He compared it to Romney calling himself a “severe conservative” at last year’s CPAC.
Bossie pointed out that conservatives need to remember Reagan’s ‘three legged stool’ of free enterprise, strong national defense and pro-family social policies and commit to maintaining these core policies.
“We must not cede these principles to President Obama on one hand or the Republican establishment on the other,” Bossie said. “Together we must fight those who want to sell out our principles.”
Bossie said that Republicans didn’t win elections in 2012 because they didn’t run bold conservative campaigns.
“It’s important that we elect conservatives now or moderates will break on important issues like the second amendment, immigration and Obamacare,” he said.
