Each week, Yeas & Nays joins Carol Joynt, the host of the Q&A Café at Nathans of Georgetown, at various power breakfast spots around the city to see which players are getting their day started with some deal-making, networking and glad-handing.

This week, we took our act to the venerable Lafayette Room at the Hay-Adams, which was nearly full by 8:30 a.m. Monday.
With the White House across the street, we weren’t surprised to see an administration figure at the “A” table in the corner with the best view of the room. Tim Goeglein quietly talked shop with an unidentified woman. As President Bush’s special assistant and deputy director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, Goeglein is Bush’s link to religious groups.
Meanwhile, at another “A” table near the piano, New York Times columnist Tom Friedman broke bread with a young man who sported a serious belt ID badge (government or not government?) and a Cole Haan shopping bag.
And after reading a sheaf of morning newspapers in the lobby, legendary Hearst White House columnist Helen Thomas was joined for breakfast by two friends, including a man who is related by marriage. They chose a cozy table in the back, with a good view of Lafayette Park and the White House.
