Paul Manafort working on Iraqi Kurdish referendum that the US opposes: Report

Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign manager, has been working to assist leaders of Iraq’s Kurds gain independence from Iraq by implementing a referendum.

However, the U.S. does not support the referendum and the Trump administration, pushing for a planned referendum this month to be called off over concern it would distract from defeating the Islamic State.

“The United States does not support the Kurdistan Regional Government’s intention to hold a referendum later this month,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement Friday. “The United States has repeatedly emphasized to the leaders of the Kurdistan Regional Government that the referendum is distracting from efforts to defeat ISIS and stabilize the liberated areas.” However, Manafort has aided many foreign clients whose interests have not completely aligned with American foreign policy in the past. Additionally, his role in the Russia probe has not stopped him from accepting international business as he is reportedly struggling to keep up with his legal fees.

Manafort was approached by an intermediary for Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani’s son several months ago. He agreed to assist with the referendum and has been part of planning the push for Western recognition, according to the New York Times.

Manafort has traveled to Iraq to advise the Barzanis’ allies about the referendum and he may travel back as the referendum is voted upon.

Manafort has been a key figure in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation concerning whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during the 2016 election.

It was revealed Tuesday that Manafort’s action’s for the past 11 years are being investigated as part of the probe and Mueller has told Manafort has told Manafort his team intends to charge him with possible tax and financial crimes.

Additionally, Manafort, who also was entangled in an FBI investigation, was wiretapped during and after the 2016 election. Mueller is also investigating the content of what was intercepted by U.S. government officials.
