Campbell: No grudge

STERLING – The words sounded familiar only because they were. Jason Campbell issued them nearly a month ago, when the Redskins first pursued another quarterback.

The Redskins first failed to acquire then-Denver quarterback Jay Cutler and Saturday they couldn’t move up in the draft to select Southern Cal’s Mark Sanchez.

“I won’t hold any grudges,” said Campbell, shortly before his Leukemia Golf Classic Monday at Lowes Island Club. “My mindset is moving on; the guys I’m on the field with are counting on me to be there for them. Who knows? Going through something like this may bring us closer together.”

Campbell is entering the final year of his contract. Even if the Redskins had acquired Sanchez, he would have started. When asked if he would have demanded a trade had Sanchez come to Washington, Campbell laughed and said, “No comment.”

Earlier, when asked what his alternatives were had Sanchez come here, Campbell said, “There were certain things discussed, but nothing was written in stone.”

Campbell would not say if he’d want to sign an extension should he play well next season. An NFL source said he would be surprised if Campbell walked away out of spite after a good season because of his feelings for the city and his teammates.

And Campbell said he’s kept his relationship with owner Dan Snyder and executive vice president Vinny Cerrato — the two forces behind the failed pursuits — a professional one.

“I always look at it as through the fire, something great has to come of it,” he said. “If I were to act rebellious it would make the situation a lot worse.

“One thing I’m upset about is it makes you feel like you’re a bad quarterback or you’re someone that’s not wanted. But it makes you a stronger person and quarterback.”

The Redskins tried to assuage Campbell after the attempt for Cutler, meeting with him the next day.

“It’s an awkward situation,” he said, “because after the Cutler deal we did sit down and talk and then the Sanchez talk came up [afterward]. … It’s taught me a lot.”

Said receiver Antwaan Randle El, “Jason could have pulled a Cutler and wanted to get out, but he’s sticking it through. It will benefit him.”
