Former FBI Director James Comey testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday had the feel and intrigue of the United States playing in a World Cup soccer match.
Bars around Washington, D.C. opened early in the morning to accommodate political junkies as they were about to witness one of the most important hearings conducted that could possibly shed more light on the Trump campaign’s connection to Russia.
Liberals were sorely mistaken as this hearing provided more information about Comey’s relationship with President Trump than anything he was investigating, particularly the Russia probe. And they were mostly disappointed that any talk of impeaching Trump for obstruction of justice were pretty much put on the backburner.
“For the most part, I think [Trump] is going to get away with everything,” one man at Shaw Tavern in Northwest D.C. told Red Alert Politics.
Another said, “Even if [impeachment] happens, it’s going to take forever.”
One woman who had gotten to Union Bar at Capitol Hill early to watch the hearing was particularly distressed, telling Red Alert Politics that had it been anyone else who was president, they would be gone by now.
“This isn’t a normal presidency,” she said. “Our country isn’t normal right now. People have been talking about this pretty much being on par with Watergate, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to have the same effect as Watergate did.”
